This beautiful glacier lake (Bâlea Lake) is located in the middle of the Făgărăș Mountains. A sloppy but well-maintained road, referred as Transfăgărășan, makes it easily accessible from Sibiu:

Up there, several hiking trails start and go to local viewpoints. We picked the one that overlooks the lake. After a 45mn climb, we reached another glacier lake, Capra Lake. Though the climb was easy, the area was very windy and dark clouds were threatening, so we only stayed a few minutes.

Beyond Bâlea Lake, the Transfăgărășan road goes down to Pitești with many picturable landscapes. We stopped at Cabana Capra though, where there is a very good restaurant (with traditional Romanian food – and Papanași :-P) before turning back to our next destination (Viscri).
The transfăgărășan road is quite famous among photographers!
